Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin is the winner of the 2013 Washington’s Children’s Choice Picture Book Award. K-3 students from all over Washington State voted for their favorite book from a list of 19 nominees and Pete the Cat won.
The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan is the winner of the 2013 Young Reader’s Choice Award in the junior division. 4th -6th grade students voted from all over the Pacific Northwest.

Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper is the winner of the 2013 Sasquatch Award. Over 10,000 students in grades 4-6 from all over Washington State vote for this award.

Eric Ode came to Westgate to share songs, poems, and writing in celebration of Young Author’s Day. He has published 4 books, including Taxi Man and Sea Star Wishes. He met with students and talked about the writing process.

Kindergarten to 3rd grade students all voted this week for their favorite book out of 20 Washington’s Children’s Choice Picture Book Award nominees. The votes from Westgate will be sent in and tallied with votes from students all over Washington to choose the best book for the award. The most popular WCCPBA nominees at Westgate are Pete The Cat: I Love My White Shoes, Even Monsters Need Haircuts, and 11 Experiments that Failed.
Some students in grades 3-6 read at least two nominees for the Sasquatch Award and the Young Reader’s Choice Award and voted for their favorite book for each award. Their votes will be totaled with students’ votes all over Washington State to give the awards. The most popular books for these awards were 13 Treasures, Out of My Mind, and Love, Aubrey.

Come to the Westgate Library March 19 -21 to order book at the University Book Store Book Fair to support the library. The book fair will be open in the library until 7pm on March 21 plus you can shop online and at the two stores March 18-24 and support the library. See details below:

The book trailer In A Heart Beat created by sixth graders Gaby and Nikki won all four 2013 Westgate Book Trailer Awards. It won in the categories of Best Images, Best Text, Best Music/Sound effects, and Best Convincing You to Read Book. Congratulations!
Eighteen teams of sixth graders and room 14 worked for several months in library class planning, collecting images and music, and then creating a book trailer using Photostory. The goal was to create a book trailer that would convince other people to read the book.
The books trailers will soon be posted on this blog for everyone to view.

Westgate students read together around the school to celebrate Read Across America on March 1st. This nation-wide day is linked to Dr. Seuss and the love of reading. Students and staff also received a bookmark to use when they read at home.

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is the winner of the 2013 Newbery Award for best book of the year. It is based on the true story of a gorilla who lived at a Tacoma mall for years.
The Newbery Honor books are: Bomb: The Race to Build – and Steal- the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin, Splendors and Glooms by Laura Amy Schlitz, and Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage.

The winner of the 2013 Caldecott Award for best illustrations is This is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen.

We now have a small collection of ebooks in the Westgate Library that you can read on a computer. Just go to the library blog and click on the Links page. Scroll down to the Databases section of the links and click on VIA eBooks. Students and teachers have a username and password for use outside school. Enjoy!

Thank you to everyone for supporting the Usborne Book Fair at the Westgate Library. With the profit we were able to purchase almost $1000 worth of books for the library. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the book fair a success.
